Lapins Cherry
Lapins is a heavy producer of delicious, large sweet cherries. It is hardy to zone 5, and the fruits ripen later in the cherry season.
Lapins has been a popular commercial variety since its introduction in the early 1980s. The variety continues to earn a place on the prestigious 'Annual Garden of Merit' list from the Royal Horticultural Society, which is awarded by a panel of experts to plants that are excellent for ordinary use, reasonably resistant to pests and disease, and can be expected to be of good quality.
Uses: Fresh eating, and any other use you can think of - dried, juice, preserves, pies, and more.
Pollination: Self-pollinating, and an excellent pollenizer for other sweet cherries.
Disease resistance: Not known for any particular susceptibility or resistance to disease, but is resistant to rain cracking.
Parentage: Van x Stella. Named after Latvian-Canadian cherry breeder Charles/Karlis Lapins, who developed self-fertile cherry cultivars at the Summerland Research Centre in BC. Summerland has been a centre of cherry breeding in Canada and is still the primary source of virus-free propagation material for fruit trees in Canada.
Rootstock: Krymsk 6.
