Gala apple
You have likely eaten Gala apples purchased from a grocery store, which will generally have varying degrees of quality – some a little tasteless, or mealy. Don’t let that dissuade you from growing your own Gala! Its flavour is very good when eaten freshly picked.
Mature Galas are a deep red colour, and ripen in September.
Disease resistance: susceptible to scab, cedar apple rust, and fire blight.
Parentage: Golden Delicious x Kidd’s Orange Red (itself a cross of Cox’s Orange Pippin x Red Delicious). Developed in New Zealand by apple breeder James Hutton Kidd.
